Meet Our Headmaster
Mr David Gates
Mr Gates is a committed Christian who has worked in a range of teaching, boarding and leadership positions at Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore), Canberra Grammar, The Armidale School, Geelong Grammar (Timbertop Campus) and Shoalhaven Anglican School at Milton where he was Head of the Senior School.
Mr Gates is an energetic and highly motivated educational leader with excellent interpersonal skills and a strong desire to be part of building a real sense of community. He believes in a broadly based education which aims to develop well rounded students ready for tertiary study, further training or work placement and responsible adults willing and ready to contribute to their community. The learning that takes place in the formal classroom must be the catalyst for further learning at home and viewed in the context of life long learning.
Mr Gates believes that students should be challenged in a wide variety of activities to take them out of their comfort zone in order to experience personal growth. He has a strong commitment to co-curricular programs being actively involved in student leadership development, coaching sporting teams and organising outdoor education experiences during his 35 years in independent schools.
Mr Gates believes that the Christian values on which the school is founded are central – ‘faith, hope and love’ need to be modelled and practised in our attitude and actions towards each other on a daily basis, in the classroom and in activities outside of the classroom.
Mr Gates has spent a great deal of his time in pastoral roles in schools developing, implementing and in-servicing staff in restorative justice practices to bring about healing in relationships and mutual respect. He believes that the aim of all discipline and pastoral programs is to develop character and a level of self-discipline so that increasingly students will do what is right ‘when no one is watching.’
Mr Gates and his wife Gillian have six children aged from 24 to 14 with three undertaking tertiary studies, one undertaking a 12 month Gap placement in Perth Scotland, one as a professional ballet dancer in Germany and the youngest in Year 9 at The Scots School. Mr Gates spent his formative years in Papua New Guinea as the son of missionary parents before returning to Sydney for his secondary education. Following school, he studied at Sydney University and Sydney Teachers College with his teaching majors being English and History along with a major in Psychology.
Mr Gates has been involved in his local community both through his own interests and through the extensive sporting and cultural pursuits of his children. He has been actively involved in the local running, swimming, cricket and football clubs, enjoys a round of golf and has been an involved member of his local church.
Mr Gates believes that the strong faith modelled by his parents and his experiences in a range of independent schools over the last 30 years have prepared him for the role of Headmaster of The Scots School. Mr Gates joined the Scots community in 2011.
