About the Equestrian Team

The Scots School Equestrian Program is a Co-
Curricular program designed to allow students who have their own horses to train and compete during the summer periods. It is offered as a Summer Sport and runs during Term 4 and Term 1 each year.

Students train their horses or undergo instruction (external to the school) on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons (during the regular senior school sport session). The weekend sporting commitment is then spent competing or continue with training instruction. Please note, it is expected that at least 3 competitions are attended each term.

The Scots School participates numerous Inter-school competitions, including:

  • St Stanislaus’ College Inter-school Competition (Feb) (K-12)
  • Evans Crown Horse Sports Day at Lithgow (March) (K-12)
  • The North West Equestrian Expo at Coonabarabran (Early June) (7-12)
  • Kandos Horse Sports Day (November) (K-12)

Please note, all members of the program are expected to participate at each of these events.

Students are also able to participate in other Inter-school activities with discussion with the MIC Equestrian.  These may include:

  • Local Shows – we do encourage as many of our riders as possible to attend the local shows
  • EA NSW Inter-school Championships – this event is held at SIEC early in March. Information about this competition is available from the MIC Equestrian or from the EA website. Entries close for this event in the first week of February and must be completed online at www.nominate.com.au .
The cost of participating at SIEC is very high and we do not expect all members of the program to even consider this event. However it would be very good to have a Scots  team each year so please let the MIC Equestrian know if you are interested.
  • Canberra and Sydney Royal shows and representative Breed Shows and Hack Council events – some of our more experienced riders will be accepted to compete at these prestigious events. School leave MUST be sought to have time off school.
  • Other Inter-school Competitions – again this season it would be good to have some representation at other inter-school events. Students will have full support to attend other events and encourage you to consider any competitions that may be suitable for your child. Please feel free to consult
with the MIC Equestrian if you are not sure of what may be expected at the various types of competition.
  • Pony Club Events – many of our riders are also members of their local pony club. It is great for students to attend pony club rallies and to compete at the many competitions which are offered by the clubs.

The Scots School also hosts the Highland Gathering Show Jumping Carnival which is held during the schools Highland Gathering in March. All students in the program are expected to be involved in the organisation of and to participate in this event.

It is expected that riders will want to pursue different avenues with their horses such as Dressage, Show Jumping, Breed Performance and Halter events, Sporting, Camp Drafting and so on. It is our mission to support all our students as they develop their talents in these areas. It is also important that all riders continue to improve their flat riding as this is the key component in any specialist area. It is also important that although some riders will not actively participate in the main disciplines of inter-school competitions,  such as Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing and Hacking,  they participate in instruction which the school organises as this is in line with most inter-school competitions and at Coonabarabran North West Equestrian Expo.

All students are encouraged to enrol in Equestrian Australia’s Equiskills Program. More information on this can be obtained from the MIC equestrian, or via email scots@scots.nsw.edu.au.

Regular clinics are held to aid students in achieving their goals for this program
