SECONDARY
Scots
is a small School with two streams in the Secondary School from Years 7 to 10
and a broad range of subject offerings in Years 11 and 12. Class sizes are also
small and therefore there is an emphasis on the personal level of care that can
be given to each student. All staff know the students well and the students have
every opportunity to know those in their year group as well as students in other
years at more than a superficial level.
The
Secondary School at Scots is divided into three stages of learning.
Stage
4 Comprises Years 7 and 8. The curriculum follows the Board of
Studies curriculum requirements. Students study the following core subjects:
English
Mathematics
Science
Geography
History
Design
& Technology
Agriculture
French
Music
Visual
Arts
PD/H/PE
Christian Studies
This
curriculum provides a platform for future learning and is a solid grounding in
the major learning disciplines. There is a mix of subjects taught such that the
various creative, language, scientific and mechanical skills are developed. From
2005 Year 8 students will engage in interdisciplinary studies which requires students
to draw together their skills across a range of subjects and provides them the
opportunity of developing their creative skills in a structured manner which is
different from the standard classroom environment.
Stage
5 Comprises Years 9 and 10 where all students study the following
core subjects:
English
Mathematics
Science
Geography
History
Christian
Studies
PD/H/PE
Students
then choose two elective subjects which they generally study for the duration
of Stage 5. The electives for Stage 5 are:
Agriculture
Design & Technology
Visual Arts
Commerce
Food Technology
Music
Drama
Languages
(through the Open High School)
The
intention of Stage 5 learning is to develop appropriate thinking skills
and to engage in activities which allow students to develop appropriate skills
for learning in the Senior School. From 2005 a program for Year 9 students which
operates outside the standard classroom environment for two days per ten day cycle
will be introduced. In this time they engage in a number of activities which expand
their experience and thinking. The activities include team building and collaborative
exercises, reflective and evaluative thinking activities, spiritual reflection,
individual and group performances, student designed projects, physical exercise
and two or three day camps/excursions. This special program provides students
with a focus in their learning which is relevant to their learning needs at this
stage of their academic life and social development at school. It provides stimulation
to their learning and at the same time develops the skills necessary for learning
in the Senior School and for life long learning.
Stage
6 Comprises Years 11 and 12 and is primarily focused on preparing
students for the Higher School Certificate which in turn gives them access to
tertiary study as well as preparing them for life beyond school. The curriculum
at Scots is broad and the following range of subjects is offered:
