Inspirational Speakers at Annual Rugby and Netball Dinners

Tuesday, August 29, 2017
The two guest speakers at the Netball and Rugby Dinners were highly impressive with the message they had for our students. We are incredibly fortunate to have such high calibre Australian representatives who are prepared to give up their time to inspire the next generation. The guest speaker at the Netball Dinner was Holly Simons an Australian Champion Cyclist. Her message to the girls transcended sport with a big emphasis on commitment, focus and dealing with disappointment. Disappointments and setbacks make you stronger and your determination to fight back rather than give up is an important quality of highly successful people. The guest speaker at the Rugby Dinner was James Holbeck who played Rugby for the Australian Schoolboys, the ACT Brumbies and Australia. His very strong message to the students was to take responsibility for yourself through hard work and determination and not to whinge or blame others when things don’t go your way. He explained that not being selected or getting injured was part of sport and life. It is how you bounce back and deal with this that is the real measure of you as a person. James also had a very clear Christian message which he shared about how finding Jesus and becoming a Christian as an adult changed his view on things.

The students enjoyed the end of season celebrations and those who spoke on behalf of their team mates did so most impressively. What was really obvious to me was the tremendous pride that each student had in their school and the enjoyment they experience through playing sport together and with their school friends. It was also good to recognise the contribution of the Year 12 students who have played their last season of sport for the School. Their contribution to this important aspect of our co-curricular offering is greatly appreciated. I also wish to acknowledge the hard work of the Friends of Rugby Committee and the Friends of Netball Committee in assisting with the organisation of the night. The Rugby Dinner Auction was a huge success again with many wonderful items available for auction. Once again important funds were raised with $5,600 being raised from the auction. I particularly wish to thank Frank Telfser as outgoing President of the Friends of Rugby for his enormous contribution. I also wish to acknowledge the three Year 12 families who have made a huge contribution during the last six or more years –Frank & Shevahn Telfser, John & Brenda Gordon and Greg & Rosanne Stanfield.
