Young Rural Achievers Awards Triumph

Tuesday, May 07, 2013 07 May

The Young Rural Achievers Awards, supported by the Bathurst Show Society and the Bathurst City Centre, are designed to showcase students in the local region who are undertaking studies in the area of Agriculture. Students from The Scots School participate in these awards each year in addition to exhibiting cattle and sheep. Many of these students are also keen equestrians.

These awards encourage and reward local youth for their interest in rural life and acknowledge their participation in the Royal Bathurst Show and country shows further afield.

To enter in the Young Rural Achievers Awards, participants must attend Bathurst Show either as a steward or exhibitor.  In addition to this participation, a folio is submitted, focussing on achievements. Each entrant writes a letter, communicating why they should be considered a Young Country Achiever. The participants also are interviewed by a panel of judges regarding their aspirations, participation in the rural community and current agricultural issues.

In 2013, The Scots School performed extremely well. In the senior division, Year 12 student Georgina Simcock was awarded first place. Fellow Year 12 student Edith Lennon and Brooke Andrew (Year 11) were named equal second place recipients. The accolades didn’t end there, as Georgina Simcock then went on to be awarded the Grand Champion Young Rural Achiever of 2013. Jessica Spence (The Scots School 2010) won the Open division of the award outright.

Senior Agriculture Teacher, Mrs Libby Dawes, explained “the students are provided with valuable experience in interviews which leads to confident and capable students.”

The Scots School appreciate of the support of the Bathurst Show Society in staging these awards.

Georgina Simcock, Edith Lennon and Brooke Andrew display their ribbons and certificates after taking out 1st and 2 equal 2nd places in the 2013 Young Rural Achievers Awards.
