It is with great sadness that we convey the news that Michael Aikman passed away on the 17th February 2005 at the age of 73. Mr Aikman was Headmaster at The Scots School from 1966 to 1973.

Barry Nott (President of Old Boys & Girls Assoc.) and
Colin Longford (Chairman of the Board of TSS)

The Highland Gathering on Sunday 20.2.05 gave TSS an opportunity of officially opening the refurbishment of Bulkeley House. A letter to all ex-students of the School was sent inviting then to attend the Highland Gathering, and in particular, this ceremony. Many ex-students came and visited the School and were very pleased to be here. Scots certainly has a wonderful history and is proud of the many Old Boys & Girls who have been through the School. In talking with many of them it is clear they have very fond memories and enjoyed their time here. We wish to foster our association with past students of the School and Mr Barry Nott, the current President of the Old Boys & Girls Association, is very keen to maintain links and reconnect with ex-students of the School. Mr Nott officially opened the refurbishment of Bulkeley on Sunday and we thank him for his words and for being our guest of honour on this important occasion. Mr Barry Nott is one of the six Nott brothers who came through Scots and was one of the first boarders to occupy Bulkeley House. His son Hugh is currently a boarder in Bulkeley House and his niece, Sophia, is a boarder in Galloway House. We very much value the association of the Nott family with The Scots School for over the past 50 years or so. Back to the top

MEMORIES FROM MRS IVES

From the Archives:

I thought it would be a good time to give information on the late John C. Bulkeley, Esq after whom Bulkeley House was named.

John Bulkeley attended school at the Cooerwull Academy at Bowenfels. Cooerwull House at Scots School preserves its memory. The stone at the front entrance to Cooerwull House came from the Academy. On leaving the Academy he entered the Bank of New South Wales. He trained at Sydney Teachers College and the University of Sydney. He served with the Royal Artillery in World War II.

Me Bulkeley came to The Scots School in May 1946 just few weeks after it reopened. From 1942 to the end of 1945 it was a Branch School of The Scots College, Bellevue Hill, Sydney. The Scots College evacuated its junior boys to Bathurst after Japanese submarines entered Sydney Harbour in 1942.

During his time at the School, Me Bulkeley was Acting Headmaster on two occasions but was known and loved as Headmaster of "The Kennel". It was "The Kennel" that most of the hundreds of boys who knew him remember his influence on them, an influence founded on his belief that his own witness was of the utmost importance. He aimed to know the boys in his care and to maintain that interest beyond the School.

In 1951, Mr Bulkeley founded the Cadet Unit and was OC for a number of years and it was he who was responsible for outfitting the unit with kilts some years later. In 1952 Mr Bulkeley founded The Scots School Old Boys Association TSSOBA. During most of his time at Scots, Mr Bulkeley was Master in Charge of the Preparatory School. When this was closed down in 1964 he became the School Bursar, a position he held until his retirement in 1967. He passed away on 1 April 1971.

At the conclusion of his Speech Day Report in 1965, he spoke to the boys leaving the School to start a new life outside School. I had the pleasure to work with John Bulkeley from 1964 to 1967.

OLD BOYS' CRICKET

Beautiful weather on Sunday 13th March greeted the 1st XI and Old Boys as they battled for the Wiburd Trophy. The 1st XI won the toss and fielded first. A good partnership from Luke Wood and Greg Radford set solid platform for The Old Boys. Robert McCreery, David McCreery, Ron Radford and Max Martin also chipped in with the bat to set a total of 200 runs.

The 1st XI tried valiantly to chase the 5 runs per wicket needed to win. Adrian Carey (26), Tyson Smith (13), Stewart Legge (31) and Sean Fogarty (12) all were amongst the runs, but they fell short and were all our 128 runs.

The day finished off with an afternoon tea and presentation of the trophy by Don Wiburd. The 1st XI also presented the trophies for the 2004/4 season with the major awards going to:

Best Batman - Adrian Carey (212 runs), Best Bowler - Trent Fardon (10 wickets), Most Improved - David Ducker and Most Valuable Player - Adrian Carey.
