MEET THE HEADMASTER

Mr Eric Bernard commenced his position as Headmaster of the Scots School at the beginning of Term 3 2004 and is a committed educator of considerable experience.

After completing his initial teacher training in Armidale he was appointed to teach Mathematics at Balmain High School in 1976. He has studied part-time at Macquarie University, University of New England and Sydney University. He holds a number of academic qualifications: B. Ed (UNE); Dip Teaching (Armidale); Graduate Diploma Educational Studies (Sydney CAE). He has held senior positions at Knox Grammar School (1997) and at St Andrew's Cathedral School as Director of Studies and Head of Mathematics and Computing (1980-1991).

A keen soccer coach and an active churchgoer, Eric Bernard enjoys recreational sailing and as a family man, has four children with his wife, Cheryl. Three of his children have finished secondary school while the youngest attends The Scots School in Year 11.

The Scots School, according to Eric, offers an impressive range of subject selections and extracurricular activities. He believes Scots to be an established school with traditional Christian values and a strong foundation. Continuing to improve academic results, attracting students who will contribute to these goals, providing the best girls and boys educational programs and expanding sporting cultures for both boys and girls, are the major aims and new challenges that Mr Bernard is looking forward to in 2005.

It is important to consider the needs and learning styles required for each child while working with teachers and staff to ensure that effective communication between everyone is achieved.Back to the top

NEWS FROM THE OLD BOYS & GIRLS ASSOCIATION

Annual General Meeting A small group of Old Boys gathered at the School on Saturday, 18th September for the Annual General Meeting of the Association. It was an historic meeting with the Association resolving to change the name of the organization to The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Association. This change was introduced to recognize the School's change to a co-educational student body.

The Association will now complete the requirements to alter the Constitution to make the name change official. President, Barry Nott (Class of 1968) and Secretary, David Barker ( Class of 1980 ) re-elected to their positions with David Roggiero elected as the Vice President. The Bursar's Office will act as Treasurer until a volunteer is found to fill the position.

Life Membership Conferred on Betty Ives
The Association also resolved to invite Mrs Betty Ives to become an Honorary Life Member of the Association.

Mrs Ives is only the 6th Life Member and first female to be so honoured. Mrs Ives is well known to many Old Boys from her many years of service as the Headmaster's Secretary and for her support of the Association.

Membership Fees
The Annual General Meeting also resolved to change the membership fee structure. Life Membership will be changed to $120 with a discount price of $100 to leaving students who sign up prior to their Valedictory Dinner. The Association will no longer offer Annual Membership after 2004 due to difficulties in keeping up to date records of addresses. Paid up Annual Memberships of 2 years or more will be converted to Life Membership from 2005.

The Association recently welcomed 11 new members of the Association from the Year of 2004. The parents of the students were mailed earlier in the year with an invitation to purchase gift membership for their child. The Association with the kind assistance of the Bursar's office will write to students of recent years with an offer of Life Membership as this has in abeyance for some time.

Association welcomes new Headmaster
The President of the Association, Barry Nott (Class of 1968) and Secretary, David Barker (Class of 1980) recently met with the School's new Headmaster, Mr Eric Bernard and welcomed him to Scots.
